Wheaton completes two-game sweep of McDaniel with 8-0 win
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Kristen Hunt was one of five Wheaton (Mass.) players with two hits, adding two RBIs and two runs scored to lead her team to an 8-0 non-conference softball victory over McDaniel in six innings at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday.
Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) recorded all three hits for the Green Terror (3-7), who was shut out for the second time this season.
Amanda Poplaski, Rachel Merrick, Nicole DeRosa and Megan Roy rounded out the two-hit efforts for the Lyons (6-4), who completed a two-game sweep of McDaniel in the last three days.
Hunt drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the second before a Roy infield single put runners at first and second.
After a popup on a bunt attempt, Marissa Hobocan was able to successfully get the sacrifice down before Allison Drury followed with an RBI single to score Hunt.
A fielding error doubled the advantage one batter later.
A fielding error to lead off the fourth inning allowed Hobocan to reach.
With one out, Poplaski, Merrick and Katy Salka put together three straight singles to stretch the lead to 4-0.
A second error in the inning and Hunt RBI single pushed the advantage to 5-0.
A hit by pitch and error put runners at first and second to start the sixth.
A walk by Salka loaded the bases for DeRosa, who singled before an out prevented a run from scoring.
Hunt followed with an RBI bunt single before a fielder's choice and Ashley Brillon RBI single extended the lead to eight and ended the game with two on and two out in the sixth.
Allison Baker struck out seven in six innings of work for Wheaton.
The Green Terror returns to action against Centenary (N.J.) on Friday. Game time is 3 p.m.
