McDaniel forges split with Mary Baldwin

Green Terror explodes for 16 runs in nightcap

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) went a combined 4-for-6 with five runs scored and two RBIs to lead McDaniel to a split with Mary Baldwin in non-conference softball action on Sunday.

The Squirrels (1-6) used a nine-run first inning to take the opener 11-6 for their first win of the season before the Green Terror (1-1) bounced back with a five-run first in the nightcap to key a 16-7 victory.

Lauren Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), Lauren Wildason (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) led off with three straight singles for a 1-0 lead.

A wild pitch, error and Toomey double stretched the lead to 4-0 before Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) capped off the frame with an RBI single.

Three walks and an Amber Ralston RBI single in the bottom of the second made it a 5-1 game before a Toomey double and Elfert sacrifice fly stretched the lead back to five in the top of the third.

A Jessica Hogle two-run single trimmed the deficit to 6-3 before eight walks in the top of the fourth contributed to a seven-run top of the fourth, making it a 13-3 game.

Mary Baldwin responded with four runs before three runs in the top of the fifth ended the game in five innings.

An Amanda Miller three-run home run in the bottom of the first keyed a nine-run frame for the Squirrels in game one. Victoria Barrett preceded Miller blast with a bases-loaded, two-run single.

Megan Moyer later added a two-run double before an error allowed her to score, capping the inning.

Four unearned runs in the top of the second trimmed the deficit to 9-4 before an error and Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent) RBI groundout pulled the visitors within 9-5 in the fourth.

Trailing 10-5, Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a Fusco groundout.

A Ralston RBI double in the bottom of the frame set the final margin.

McDaniel returns to action on the first day of the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. The Green Terror opens its Florida trip against Rowan at 11 a.m.
