McDaniel no-hit again; Messiah takes two

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Jessica Rhoads became the second pitcher in six days to no-hit McDaniel, keying a Messiah sweep in non-conference softball action on Thursday.

The Falcons (26-4), behind Rhoads’ 15-strikeout game-one performance, notched a 2-0 win before completing the sweep with a 10-4 win in a six-inning nightcap.
Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) each notched two hits to pace the Green Terror (11-10) in game two.
Rhoads allowed only two base runners in the opener while her offensive provided just enough late-inning support for the win.
An Abby Bergakker double and Abi Buckler RBI single in the bottom of the fifth broke a scoreless deadlock before a second Bergakker double an inning later drove in pinch-runner Ashley Lehman.
Trailing 1-0 on a Bergakker double and run scored in the bottom of the second, Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./ST. Vincent Pallotti) and Elfert each notched RBI singles in the top of the third to give McDaniel a one-run lead.
An Amy Bowie RBI single and Nicole Adams two-run home run gave the Falcons a 5-2 lead in the home third.
Messiah stretched the lead to 6-2 an inning later before using a Jess Hughes pinch-hit two-run single to cap a four-run sixth and end the game.
McDaniel returns to action at Swarthmore on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
