Merkel finishes 50th at championship

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) finished 50th to lead McDaniel at the 2013 Centennial Conference men's cross country championship hosted at the Carroll County Farm Museum on Saturday.

The Green Terror finished eighth as a team with 241 points. Johns Hopkins won its first title with 34 points, edging Dickinson by five points. Haverford was third with 61 points at the nine-team championship.

Merkel crossed in a time of 28:26.7 to lead McDaniel while Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) was 58th with a time of 28:49.5.

Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was 69th overall with a time of 29:20.8.

Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) finished 75th with a time of 29:40.6 while Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) was 84th (31:21.2) and Kyle Crouse (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key) was 91st (33:27.7).

The Green Terror returns to action at the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 16. Action begins at 11 a.m.
