Merkel finishes 30th at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) finished 30th to lead McDaniel at the Gettysburg Invitational in men's cross country action on Saturday.

As a team, the Green Terror finished 17th with 482 points in its final tuneup before hosting the Centennial Conference championship at the Carroll County Farm Museum in two weeks. Dickinson won the title at the 26-team event with 86 points.

Merkel crossed the line in a time of 27:09.9 to lead a squad that had all five runners on the course turn in personal-best 8,000-meter times.

Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) finished 90th in a time of 28:08.9 while Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was 96th in a time of 28:15.7.

Kyle Crouse (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished with a time of 31:24.5 (211th) while Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooten) crossed with a time of 32:03.4 (227th).

Action at the championship begins at 11 a.m. on Nov. 2.
