Merkel sets record in 3K

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) finished the second in the 3,000 meters with a new program-record time to lead McDaniel at the Battleground Relays hosted by Mary Washington in season-opening men's outdoor track and field action on Friday and Saturday.

Merkel finished the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:13.20 to break the record by nearly six seconds. He also won the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:23.11 to lead the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet.

Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also pulled off the same double, finishing fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 9:49.35 to rank ninth on the program's all-time list. He was third in the 5,000 with a time of 17:07.07.

Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) led the way in the field events, winning the shot put with a throw of 12.41 meters. He was also second – and the top collegiate finisher – in the discus with a throw of 36.06 meters. Both throws hit the Centennial Conference qualifying marks.

Zach Paguirigan (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) made his debut with a trio of top-four finishes. He was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.69 meters. He also finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.63 in the finals, bettering his prelims time by 0.01 seconds. Both the jump and sprint hit the conference-qualifying mark.

He was also second, and top collegiate finisher, in the high jump by clearing 1.52 meters.

Dunn added a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.31 meters.

Kevin Rosenthal (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 23.68 meters.

Kyle Crouse (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key) rounded out the competitors, finishing seventh in the 3,000 with a time of 10:43.93.

The Green Terror returns to action with the full team at the Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater on Saturday.
