Kronmiller wins javelin

TOWSON, Md. – Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) won the javelin to lead McDaniel to a second-place finish at the Goucher Invitational in men's track and field action on Saturday.

The Green Terror amassed 147.67 points to finish second to Salisbury, which won the meet with 332.33 points.

Kronmiller unfurled a toss of 50.31 meters to lead a host of Centennial Conference (CC) qualifiers in the event. McDaniel had eight of the top 10 finishers – all of whom hit the necessary standard.

Andy Guilford (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was second to his teammate with a time of 43.77 meters. Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]) was third (41.19) while Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was fourth (41.02). James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) placed seventh (37.74) while Gary Smith was eighth (37.64). Ben Munyan (Middletown, Md./St. John's College Prep) finished ninth (29.97) while Alex Murchison (Edgewood, Md./Archbishop Curley) placed 10th (28.98).

Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) finished third both the discus (40.31) and shot put (13.41) with a pair of conference qualifiers. He was also fifth in the hammer, throwing a distance of 31.32.

Dunn added two more qualifiers to his throws list, finishing fifth in the shot put (12.16) and sixth in the discus (32.16).

Weiner was fourth in the shot put with a CC-qualifying throw of 12.65 while Kronmiller was seventh with a CC-qualifying toss of 11.88.

Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 37.44 to hit the CC mark.

Smith and Jordan Briden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) were among a three-way tie for second in the high jump, clearing 1.73 meters.

Smith was also third in the pole vault with a CC-qualifying height of 3.19 meters. Smith was also seventh in the 110 hurdles (17.24 seconds) and sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:01.47).

Birden finished fourth in the long jump, reaching a CC-qualifying distance of 5.87 meters.

On the field side, Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) led the way with a second-place finish in the 3,000. His time of 3:34.32 is sixth all-time, improving three seconds from last week. He was also fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:17.67.

Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) crossed third in the 1,500 (4:14.86) while Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) was third in the 800 (2:02.98). LaPenta's time hit the conference mark in the event.

Munyan finished eight in the 400 hurdles (1:06.76) while Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) was seventh in the 100 (11.76) to round out conference qualifiers. Williams improved from his eighth-place showing in the prelims, where he ran a time of 11.68.

The Green Terror returns to action at the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.
