Merkel leads way in opener
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) placed seventh in the 3,000 to lead McDaniel at the Battleground Relays hosted by Mary Washington in season-opening women's outdoor track and field action on Friday and Saturday.
Merkel finished the Friday event in a time of 9:37.47, ranking sixth on the program's all-time list, to pace the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet. On Saturday, he finished 17th in the 1,500 with a time of 4:25.92.
Gary Smith finished sixth in the 110 hurdles with a Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying time of 17.57 seconds in the finals, bettering his prelims time by 1.06 seconds.
Smith was also 11th in the 100 with a CC-qualifying time of 11.97.
Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooton) rounded out the track competitors, finishing 30th in the 1,500 (5:08.24).
Kyle Andrews was the lone competitor on the field side, finishing eighth in the shot put (10.14 meters) and 13th in the discus (23.11).
The Green Terror returns to action at the Goucher Invitational on Saturday.
