Hernandez breaks mark in weight throw

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) reset his own program record in the weight throw to lead McDaniel at the Susquehanna Open in men's indoor track and field action on Friday.

Gary Smith added a trio of all-time top-10 showings to lead the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet.

Hernandez finished 17th in the weight throw with a toss of 13.12 meters. He was also 10th in the shot put with a hurl of 13.61 meters.

Smith finished 11th in the high jump, clearing 1.73 meters to move into sixth place on the all-time list.

Smith was 23rd in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash with top-10 showings in both events. He finished the hurdles in 9.75 seconds to rank fourth and the dash in 7.58 seconds to rank ninth.

He was also 28th in the long jump with a leap of 5.01 meters.

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) finished seventh in the high jump (1.78 meters) and 25th in the long jump (5.26).

Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) was 15th in the 60 with a Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying time of 7.37 seconds. Carlos Thomas (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was 30th in the same event, finishing with a time of 7.68.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) rounded out top-10 performances, placing 14th in the 5,000. His time of 16:33.48 ranks sixth in program history.

Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) rounded out McDaniel competitors at the final tuneup before next weekend's CC championship meet.

Jones was 23th in the 800 (2:03.33) while LaPenta was 31st (2:04.94). Both were CC-qualifying times.

The championship will be held at Ursinus on Friday and Saturday.
