Butler debuts with 6’ jump

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) cleared 1.83 meters in the high jump to lead McDaniel at the Susquehanna Invitational in men's indoor track and field action on Sunday.

The senior, jumping for the first time ever, cleared six feet in his basketball shoes to earn a second go at the 2012 Centennial Conference (CC) indoor championship meet in 13 days, leading the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet. It is the squad's last action of the regular season.

He was second in the event on judge's discretion, matching Goucher's Doug Falk for the top height cleared at the meet.

Butler immediately moved into third place on the program's all-time list and third on the current CC performance list for the season. He was 0.06 meters shy of the program record and 0.1 meters shy of the ECAC-qualifying mark.

Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) bettered his own program record in the weight throw, finishing ninth with a toss of 11.98 meters.

Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]) moved into third place on that list, finishing 23rd with a hurl of 8.47 meters.

Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) recorded McDaniel's lone win of the day, taking first in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.10 seconds. He advanced to the finals as the top seed with a time of 9.21 in the prelims.

Nichols was also fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.50 meters.

Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) was also fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.04 meters, matching his best throw of the season. Hernandez, Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) and Weiner joined Wetherhold, hitting the CC mark in the event.

Hernandez finished 12th (11.85 meters) while Kronmiller was 16th (11.64) and Weiner was 21st (11.02).

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) finished sixth in the triple jump, leaping 11.77 meters. He was also 11th in the long jump (5.27). Both were CC-qualifying jumps.

Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) rounded out top-10 finishes, finishing seventh in the 400 (53.90 seconds) and eighth in the 200 (24.37) with a pair of conference-qualifying times.

The Green Terror returns to action at the CC Championship Meet hosted by Ursinus on Saturday, Feb. 25. Action begins at 10:30 a.m.
