Three-win day

HAGERSTOWN, Md. and LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) established a program and Centennial Conference (CC) record in the heptathlon to lead the McDaniel men's indoor track and field team in weekend action.

Nichols finished ninth with 3,910 points in the heptathlon at the Bison Open hosted by Bucknell on Friday and Saturday while the remainder of the Green Terror squad placed third at the Hagerstown Invitational on Saturday.

The Green Terror amassed 106 at the scored meet, finishing behind Hood (128) and Hagerstown CC (126) at the five-team invitational.

Jake Zamostny (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) paced the squad with a victory in the 800, crossing in a time of 2:04.65 – one of nine CC-qualifying marks hit on the day. The time ranks ninth on the all-time performer list.

Nichols best finish in the seven events came with a second-place showing in the shot put with his toss of 11.08 meters. He finished tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 3.60 meters.

His best point totals came in the three events on the track. He was eighth in the 1,000 with a time of 2:59.93 to earn 665 points. He also crossed eighth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.49 seconds (642 points) and was 13th in the 60 with a time of 7.76 seconds (631).

He rounded out the showing with a pair of 14th-place finishes in the long jump (5.37 meters) and high jump (1.59).

Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) added a second-place showing in the 300, finishing with a time of 28.96 seconds.

Crest and Zamostny joined Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) and Matthew Peterson (Littleton, Colo./Lakewood) on the distance medley relay, which won with a time of 11:11.05.

Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) rounded out the trio of first-place finishes, taking the shot put with a hurl of 11.85 meters – part of a 1-2-4-5-6 finish for the Green Terror in the event.

Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Nate Bell (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) also hit the necessary distance for a CC qualifier, finishing second (11.82) and fourth (10.97), respectively.

Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]) was fifth (10.42) while Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was sixth (10.12).

Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) finished third in the 800 with a CC-qualifying time of 2:06.70.

Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) placed third in the mile (4:56.01) and sixth in the 800 (2:15.90).

Brad Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana) crossed fourth in the 400 with a conference-qualifying time of 55.10 seconds.

Merkel added a fourth-place finish in the 3,000 (9:52.73) while Peterson was eighth (10:23.40) in the same event.

Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Ray Jesuit) added a pair of fifth-place showings. After a fourth-place finish in the 55 prelims with a time of 7.07, he was fifth but improved his time in the finals with a time of 7.00. He was also fifth in the 200 with a time of 24.50. Both were conference-qualifying times.

Heavner, Crest, Phillips and James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) combined to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:44.61.

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Ray Jesuit) finished fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.75 meters to place fourth on the all-time list and improve his CC-qualifying height.

Dunn was sixth in the high jump (1.57 meters) while Kyle Connor was eighth in the 200 (25.18 seconds).

The Green Terror returns to action at the DuCharme Invitational hosted by Dickinson on Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m.
