Eight records fall

LANCASTER, Pa. – Brad Brooks (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) recorded four individual program records and two NCAA Division III B-Cut records to lead McDaniel at the 2012 Franklin & Marshall Invitational in men's swimming action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, the Green Terror rewrote the record book with eight new marks en route to a sixth-place finish with 361 points. The host Diplomats won the seven-team meet with 829.5 points.

Brooks' biggest event of the weekend was the 1,650 freestyle on Friday night. The freshman knocked 45.89 seconds off the program record, winning the event with a time of 16:00.08. That time also set a new meet record and was more than 16 seconds under the NCAA B-Cut time.

His 400 IM win also came in big fashion. Brooks not only bettered the program-best mark by more than three seconds and came in under the B-Cut time but also knocked off a 14-year old Centennial Conference record with his time of 4:06.39. It was also a meet record.

Brooks' final individual program record came in his 200 IM victory, edging the best time by 0.24 seconds when he touched in a time of 1:57.08.

Bryan Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) added an individual victory and individual record of his own. He won the 50 free in a time of 21.58 after qualifying with the top time (21.51). Nuckles finished second in the 100 free but bettered his own record with a time of 47.41 seconds in the finals.

Three relay marks also fell over the weekend.

Brooks and Nuckles joined Jesse Mills (Catonsville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and Stevie Hoyt (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay, touching with a combined time of 1:28.04.

Brooks, Hoyt and Nuckles joined with Patrick Rogers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) to finish second with program-record showings in both the 400 and 800 free relays.

The 800 free relay was 14.52 seconds better than the previous mark with their time of 7:06.28 while the 400 relay came in nearly two seconds faster at 3:13.62.

Brooks' leadoff leg of 1:43.34 in the relay was also good enough for a new program-best mark in the 200 freestyle.

The two medley relays also recorded top-10 times. The 400 medley relay of Hoyt, Jono Leafblad (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Twp.), Mills and Nuckles was seventh with a time of 3:44.34, which is seventh all-time.

Brooks, Leafblad, Mills and Nuckles were eighth in the 200 relay with a time of 1:43.24, which is eighth all-time.

Mills moved into 10th place on the all-time list in the 50 free, finishing 13th with a time of 22.73 seconds. He was also 13th in the 50 free (22.73), 100 free (50.99) and 100 butterfly (55.59).

Rogers made a pair of A-cut finals, finishing seventh in the 200 free (1:48.57) and 500 free (5:00.38). Rogers qualified seventh in the 200 (1:48.31) and sixth in the 500 (4:58.47).

Hoyt was also in two A-finals, finishing sixth in the 100 butterfly after qualifying seventh. He swam a time of 54.63 in the prelims and 55.22 in the finals. He was also eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.71 after qualifying sixth in a time of 2:04.67.

Hoyt just missed the A-final in the 100 backstroke, placing ninth with a time of 58.00 seconds. He registered a time of 57.22 in the prelims.

Keegan Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) finished 11th in the 400 IM (4:42.83) and 18th in the 1,650 free (18:34.28). Duesterhaus bettered his 400 IM time by more than eight seconds from the prelims to the finals.

Leafblad finished 12th in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.75) and 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.43).

Joseph Odierno (Deale, Md./Southern) and Logan Linden (Millville, Del./Indian River) rounded out B-finals competitors for McDaniel.
