Catholic edges McDaniel
Cardinals score early in both halves for win
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kevin Duffy broke a 1-all draw just 3:23 into the second half and the Catholic defense made the lead stand for a 2-1 victory over McDaniel in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Matthew Gillen (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) scored the lone goal for the Green Terror (5-8) off a feed from Adam Dolbey (Marydel, Md./Caesar Rodney).
Ian Smith tallied the game's first goal, staking the Cardinals (5-3-2) to an early lead.
Deadlocked at the intermission, Hal Cogan centered a ball from the right baseline in the 49th minute that Duffy collected and knocked into the back of the net for the game-winner.
In the seventh minute, Michael DiMarco rocketed a ball off the nearside post that rebounded to Smith on the far side. Smith blasted home the game's first goal just 6:54 into the contest.
In the 17th minute, Dolbey sent a ball from the near wing to the back post, where Gillen was waiting to head in the equalizer.
The Cardinals finished with a 13-9 advantage in shot but just the two markers were on goal.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
