Mary Washington wins in OT

Cross, Davis convert pair of penalty kicks to force extra session

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Corey Sims had a hand in all three goals, leading Mary Washington to a 3-2 overtime victory over McDaniel on the second day of the 2009 Mary Washington Soccer Classic in men's soccer action on Sunday.

David Cross (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Marrio Davis (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) each converted second-half penalty kicks to erase a 2-0 deficit and force the extra session.

In a physical game, the Green Terror (2-2) and Eagles (1-2) combined for 36 fouls that included nine yellow cards.

With 2:03 remaining in the first overtime, Sims found Ryan Taibl, who put the ball in the back of the net and give Mary Washington its first win of the season.

Sims finished a Matt Lawrey feed just 11:09 into the game to stake his team to an early 1-0 lead.

Lawrey returned the favor just 1:57 into the second half to double the advantage.

At the 60:42 mark, Cross was awarded a penalty kick that he buried in the back of the net for his first tally of the season.

Davis was awarded another penalty kick after the Eagles drew their fourth card of the game. Davis evened the game with just 8:10 remaining in regulation.

Emmett Rutkowski made one save for Mary Washington in the win while Robert Hollasch (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) had three saves at the other end.

The Eagles finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Goucher on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
