St. Mary's jumps out to 7-0 lead en route to 12-6 victory over McDaniel

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Dennis Rosson netted seven goals to lead St. Mary's (Md.) to a 12-6 victory over McDaniel in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) recorded his first hat trick of the season for the Green Terror (1-3), tallying half of his team's goals.

Michael Mules added two goals and an assist for the Seahawks (1-2), who raced out to a 7-0 lead through the game's first 17:24 en route to their first victory of the season.

Rossin, who scored three goals in the team's first two games, opened the scoring with a goal just 58 seconds into the game.

Just 53 seconds later, Gordy Long doubled the advantage before Rossin made it a 3-0 game before three minutes had elapsed in the contest.

Rossin capped a 5-0 first quarter before also putting a bow the 7-0 start with his fourth marker of the game with 12:36 to play in the second.

Ben Yancheski (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) found Rickels for a man-up tally to break up the shutout with 9:03 showing in the second.

Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) closed the deficit to 7-2, finishing a solo run just two minutes later.

Goals from Rossin and Mules in the final 5:43 of the first half pushed the lead back to seven at the break.

A 3-0 McDaniel third quarter trimmed the gap to 9-5. Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) notched his first goal of the season with 6:15 on the clock before Michael Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Rickels went back-to-back 11 seconds apart in the final 25 seconds of the period.

St. Mary's, however, countered with another 3-0 burst keyed by Rosson's final two tallies.

Rickels wrapped up his three-goal outing, scoring unassisted with 13 seconds to play.

Young and Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) each picked up four ground balls for the Green Terror, who finished with a 42-37 advantage in shots. McDaniel held a 23-4 advantage in the third quarter alone but Pat Simpson notched six of his 10 second-half saves in the period.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Clark on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
