Dickinson strikes early for win

Red Devils take 12-8 decision from playoff-bound McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sam Abramson scored four goals to lead No. 5 Dickinson to a 12-8 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

The Red Devils (14-1, 7-1 CC), the second seed in next weekend's conference tournament at Gettysburg, scored the first four goals of the game and cruised to a victory.

Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored two goals and added two assists for the Green Terror (7-7, 4-4 CC), who earned a spot in the CC playoffs for the second straight year as the No. 4 seed and will play the host Bullets in one semifinal on Friday. Haverford meets Dickinson in the day's other semifinal. Game times will be announced on Monday.

For Preston, the two goals gave him 100 for his career – the 13th Green Terror player to accomplish that feat. He also has 103 assists to become the 11th player in program history and 17th in CC history with 200 points. He is just the fifth player in the program's history to amass both 100 goals and 100 assists.

Two Oliver Thompson goals at either end of the first quarter bookended a 4-0 start for Dickinson, tallying 3:27 into the game and with 4:40 remaining in the period.

JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) broke up the shutout 1:22 into the second quarter before Ward Gruppo reestablished the four-goal advantage two minutes later.

Preston and Abramson exchanged tallies in the final 2:50 of the half for a 6-2 margin at the break.

Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) pulled the hosts within 6-3 with 12:37 to play in the third quarter before Abramson tallied the first of his two straight 58 seconds later to stretch the lead to 8-3.

Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) made it an 8-3 game with 7:05 showing in the quarter before Brandon Palladino and Chris Dodson scored 23 seconds apart for a 10-3 edge 32 seconds later.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) made it a 10-5 game after three before Preston scored his 100th career goal 3:26 into the fourth to pull McDaniel within four.

Dodson stretched the lead back to five but Rickels and TJ Willoughby (Sykesville, Md./Century) tallied 39 seconds apart to make it an 11-8 game with 5:01 to play.

Abramson set the final margin with an unassisted marker in the final minute.
