Matos shoots even-par on Monday

MOOSIC, Pa. – James Lillie (Garret Park, Md./Walter Johnson) posted a 36-hole total of 154 to finish tied for sixth overall and lead McDaniel to a second-place finish at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational in men's golf action on Sunday and Monday.

The Green Terror slept on the 18-hole lead after shooting a round of 311 on Sunday to lead the 12-team field by six strokes. On Monday, Scranton roared back, firing a tournament-low round of 302 to post a score of 322. McDaniel's Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) sank a 35-foot birdie putt on the final hole to give the Green Terror a round of 311 and force an aggregate playoff for the second time in three years.

Scoring the low four scores, the two teams combined to shoot an aggregate score of one-under par on the 18th to return to the tee box for a second hole. On the second try, the Royals combined to go one-over par while the Green Terror posted a score of +3.

Inidividually, Lillie led the way after shooting a round of 72 on Sunday to hold the tournament lead before posting a score of 82 in the second round.

Alex Matos (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) went the other way to join Alex Kane (Danvers, Mass./Masconomet Regional) as part of tie for ninth place overall. Matos followed up his first-round score of 84 with an even-par 71 on Monday to finish with a total of 155. Kane was more consistent in his 36-hole score of 155, firing a 77 on Sunday and a 78 on Monday.

Steven Tanen (Laurel Hallow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) finished 16th overall with a score of 160, carding identical rounds of 80.

Mewhirter posted identical rounds of 82 to finished tied for 24th with a score of 164.

McDaniel and Scranton both finished 14 strokes clear of the field. Centennial Conference-foes Muhlenberg and Swarthmore tied for third overall with totals of 636.

The Green Terror returns to action at the Messiah Invitational on Tuesday, Apr. 22. Tee time is 12 p.m.
