WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel put together a 39-11 run that spanned both halves, turning a nine-point deficit into an eventual 74-61 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Thursday.
Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Saliesianum) led the Green Terror (7-7, 3-4 CC) with 20 points, including hitting 6 of 9 attempts from 3-point range. Among those triples was a halfcourter that beat the first-half horn and capped a 9-0 finish to the half that tied the game at 36-all.
Kahlil Garnes led the Fords (2-11, 1-6 CC) with 14 points.
A Joe Hartman 3-pointer grew the Haverford lead to its largest of the game at 36-27 with 2:32 to play in the first.
At the other end of the floor, Isaac Ray (Fredericksburg, Pa./Northern Lebanon) missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but got his own rebound and laid it home to spark a half-closing rally.
Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) hit a layup with 1:33 to play before Ray converted two free throws with 62 seconds remaining to make it a 36-33 game.
In the final 10 seconds, Perugino stepped in front of a pass under the basket before dribbling two steps over half court and letting the ball fly, hitting nothing but net to tie the game.
Perugino drained another triple on the first possession of the second half and the hosts didn't trail for the rest of the game.
A Garnes jumper tied the game at 42-all but an Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) driving layup and another Perugino triple pushed the lead to five.
After Jack Cork hit a layup to make it a 53-47 game with 12:14 to play, the Fords went the next 6 minutes, 33 seconds without a point while the Green Terror steadily pushed the lead to 19.
Haverford scored the game's first five points before McDaniel countered with the next seven to take a two-point lead with 15:25 showing.
Trailing 13-12, a Matt Sherman steal-and-layup sparked a 7-0 run.
McWilliams added 17 points while Kevin Yrizarry (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) added 12 points and nine rebounds. McWilliams and Perugino added eight boards apiece.
