Perugino nets 21 points in season-opening win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored 13 straight points during the middle portion of the second half to open up an 18-point advantage en route to a 72-55 win over Wilson in the men's basketball season opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) led the Green Terror (1-0) with 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including hitting five of his seven 3-point attempts.

Keion Adams paced the Phoenix (0-1) with 14 points while Marquis Nelson added 13 points.

Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) hit a layup on McDaniel's first possession of the game and the hosts never trailed.

An Adam triple tied the game at 3-all with 17:49 to play and Nelson canned a 3-pointer to make it an 8-all game with 13:52 showing.

However, Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) hit two free throws with 12:29 on the clock and Perugino hit his second trey of the night to put the Green Terror in front for good.

The first-half lead swelled as large as 28-14 on a Ben Agee (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) putback with 6:18 to play before five straight Wilson points cut the deficit to single digits.

Rashaan Bean made it a 31-25 game at the intermission.

Clinging to a 37-33 lead, Cannon hit the first of two free throws and Kevin Yrizarry (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) converted a three-point play to push the lead back to eight.

After a Nelson triple at the other end, Colin Bortner (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) converted on the break to spark the game-clinching run.

McWilliams added 16 points while Bortner chipped in 10 points and six assists. Yrizarry added eight points and 11 rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Penn State-York on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
