BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead en route to a 67-50 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Wesley Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) led the Green Terror (17-7, 12-5 CC) with 11 points and five rebounds. McDaniel will clinch a first-round bye with a victory on Saturday against Gettysburg. The Green Terror could also earn the bye in other scenarios but could also still drop to the No. 4 seed and host the first-round game in one combination of events.
Jimmy Hammer poured in 20 points to pace the Blue Jays (14-10, 11-6 CC), who clinched a playoff berth with the victory.
The second of three Brooks triples gave McDaniel an 8-7 advantage with 15:50 to play before Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) added a fast-break layup 22 seconds later for a 10-7 edge.
After Connor McIntyre and Jimmy Cranwell (Brick, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) traded layups, Matt Billups hit a layup to spark a 31-8 run with 13:39 to play.
Johns Hopkins hit all six of their first-half 3-pointers during the 10-minute, 22-second stretch.
A Luke Chambers tipin at the buzzer stretched the lead to 40-20 at the intermission.
Johns Hopkins pushed the lead to as many as 25 on a Gene Williams triple with 14:50 to play and McDaniel would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) added nine points for McDaniel.
Game time on Saturday is 3 p.m.
