WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dickinson went on an 18-2 first-half run to seize control midway through the stanza and hold on to defeat McDaniel 64-52 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.
Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) led the Green Terror (3-3, 1-2 CC) with 11 points off the bench.
Steve Collins tallied 21 points to lead the Red Devils (5-1, 3-0 CC), who are the only undefeated team in conference play remaining just three games into the CC slate.
Collins and Tucker Landy staked Dickinson to a 4-0 lead in the game's first 2:19 before Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) got McDaniel on the board 3:28 in.
Two Gerry Wixted free throws with 15:06 showing ignited the big run. Landy and Collins each hit two 3-pointers during the nearly six-minute stretch.
Ted Hinnenkamp extended the lead to as large as 19 with two free throws at the 3:37 mark en route to a 34-17 halftime advantage.
The lead swelled to 44-23 nearly four minutes into the second half.
Trailing 52-34 after a Brian Gerney free throw with 13:33 to play, Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) hit a driving layup 20 seconds later to spark an 11-6 stretch that closed the deficit to 13 with 6:04 showing.
A Perry layup with 2:41 to play made it a 12-point game but that's as close as the hosts could get in the second half.
Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) added eight points and six rebounds for McDaniel.
The Green Terror returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
