WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dickinson withstood a furious McDaniel rally, ultimately scoring 10 of the game's final 13 points to notch a 74-68 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory on Thursday.
Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) paced the Green Terror (1-3, 0-2 CC) with a career-high 15 points. Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) added his second straight double-double with 10 points, including an 8-for-8 showing from the free-throw line, and 13 rebounds.
Gerry Wixted led the Red Devils (4-1, 2-0 CC) with 26 points. Tucker Landy added 17 points while Adam Honig chipped in 15.
Trailing 57-45 on a Logan Furr 3-pointer with 11:17 to play, Nick Chia (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia/Brisbane State) hit the first of two free throws 65 seconds later to spark a 14-3 run that drew the hosts within one with 4:45 to play.
A Wixted jumper with 3:55 showing pushed the lead back to 62-59 before an exchange of free throws made it a 64-63 game with 1:09 later.
A Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) steal and layup gave McDaniel its first lead of the game with 2:43 to play before Wixted once again responded at the other end with a jumper in the lane.
A Honig jumper and two free throws each from Landry and Honig pushed the lead to 72-65 with 22.1 seconds to play.
Honig stretched the lead to nine with two more free throws before Merlo capped the night with a 3-pointer in the final seven seconds.
Wixted netted the game's first eight points to stake his team to an 8-0 lead just 1:49 into the game.
Rudd broke up the shutout with his only field goal of the night 26 seconds later.
A Chia jumper and two free throws closed the deficit to 14-12 with 13:19 on the clock.
Furr converted a layup on the break with 12:45 showing before Josh Smith (Cambridge, Mass./Chapel Hill-Channcy Hall) canned a trey to close the deficit to one.
Dickinson responded with a 13-2 run over the game's next 4:07, capped by a Wixted triple to establish a 29-17 advantage.
Two Rudd free throws closed the gap to five on two different occasions en route to a 40-33 Red Devil lead at the break.
Echols rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points.
McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 11 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
