Second-half run propels Green Terror to third straight victory
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) recorded his third consecutive 11-point outing, helping McDaniel to a 54-45 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over Ursinus on Saturday.
Devon Lesniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) added 11 points for the Green Terror (8-7, 5-3 CC), who kept pace in the tight-packed conference race at the halfway point of the CC schedule.
Jon Ward led the Bears (5-10, 2-6 CC) with 16 points and nine rebounds while Kevin Janowski added 10 points and nine boards.
After Ward extended Ursinus' one-point halftime advantage to 25-21 with a three-point play early in the second half, Cullen Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) hit the front end of two free throws with 18:48 showing to spark a 13-1 run over the next 6 minutes, 3 seconds to essentially clinch McDaniel's third straight victory.
Four straight points from TJ Jones closed the deficit to four but Sarris-Grau counted with four points of his own to push the lead to 38-30 with 9:18 showing.
After a Ward tip-in with 5:55 showing once again made it a five-point game, Lesniak beat an expiring shot clock with a 35-foot heave to stretch the lead to 43-35.
Ward once again trimmed the deficit to four with a pair of free throws with 1:00 on the clock but Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), who finished with five points, drilled a 3-pointer from the corner with just 27.8 seconds showing to seal the win.
In a first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, neither team led by more than four points.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
