WESTMINSTER, Md. – Muhlenberg scored with 5:36 to play in the first overtime to defeat McDaniel 4-3 in the Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey opener for both teams on Saturday.
Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the Green Terror (3-3, 0-1 CC) with two goals.
Dayna Hovern paced the Mules (4-1, 1-0 CC) with two goals of her own, including the game-winner.
Trailing 3-2 on an own goal in the 48th minute, Lauren Jordan scored at the 54:46 mark to even the game and eventually force ocertime.
Despite five shots, McDaniel could not find the back of the cage in overtime.
In the 80th minute, Keyleigh Thies sent a ball in from the left side that Hovern collected on the back post and put into the cage for the game-winner.
Messersmith finished off a Danielle DeColli (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) assist just 4:40 into the game.
Messersmith knocked home a Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) feed directly off a corner just 3:56 later.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
