FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Mary Washington built a 3-0 halftime lead en route to a 5-3 victory over McDaniel in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday.
Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) led the Green Terror (2-2) with two goals. Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added a goal, assist and defensive save.
Five different players scored for the Eagles (5-0), who finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots.
Amy Abernathy struck first, scoring on a breakaway at the 19:05 mark.
Just 51 seconds later, Haley Kane hit Florence George to double the advantage.
Caitlin Baker stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 22nd minute.
Corson finished a feed from Messersmith just 4:50 into the second half to break up the shutout.
Jenna Steele responded to push the lead back to three off a Baker assist in the 51st minute.
Abernathy found Nicole Guinn in the 58th minute to stretch the lead to four.
An unassisted Corson goal at the 65:53 mark and Messersmith solo tally with two minutes left set the final margin.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Stevenson on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
