Messersmith tallies late
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – McDaniel saw its two-goal lead slip away before scoring late in regulation to defeat Stevenson 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday.
Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) broke a 2-all deadlock for the Green Terror (9-5) with just 6:17 remaining in regulation.
Kaitlyn May tallied both goals for the Mustangs (5-12), scoring fewer than two minutes apart to turn a 2-0 deficit into a tie game.
After May scored off a rebound at the 57:15 mark to put Stevenson on the board, she deflected in a long pass by Brittany Martin just 1:47 later to knot the contest.
Off a scramble in the 64th minute, Messersmith hit the backboard from short range to give her team the victory.
Clinging to the one-goal edge, Sarah Meszler (Herkimer, N.Y./Herkimer) scored off a scramble in the 50th minute to double the advantage.
McDaniel finished with advantages of 23-12 in shots and 20-14 in penalty corners.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made seven saves for the Green Terror while Kelsi Zimmerman had 11 stops for the Mustangs.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
