Battista tallies goal
WESTMINSTER, Md. – In a steadily increasing rain, No. 7 Ursinus scored early in both halves and held on to down McDaniel 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Saturday.
Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) scored for the Green Terror (6-3, 2-2 CC), drawing the hosts within one with 24:04 to play.
Alyssa Thren scored twice for the Bears (7-2, 4-1 CC), who finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots.
Thren scored on a breakaway in the eighth minute as the only first-half point.
Off a corner, Alex Shafi fired home her own blocked shot just 1:44 after the break for a 2-0 lead.
Off a corner of their own, Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) hit Battista, who rocketed home a goal to make it 2-1 in the 46th minute.
Thren collected a rebound and threw it into the top of the cage for a 3-1 lead with 4:17 on the clock.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) finished with seven saves for McDaniel while Jill Lukens made three stops at the other end.
McDaniel returns to action at Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
