Looking for the next step
WESTMINSTER, Md. – When a team has one player who tallies nearly a third of its goals and that player graduates, the next year is likely spent trying to find someone to replace that single person. That's exactly what faces McDaniel as the field hockey season opens on Saturday.
The Green Terror will have to do without the services of Mandy Pickard, who scored 10 goals last year. However, McDaniel does return its next two goal scorers from last year in Lindsay Riordan (Monkton, Md./Hereford) and Kaitlin Boerman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), who combined for 11 tallies.
In addition to the return of those two players up front, the Green Terror will have to rely more on a quarter of players who saw a great deal of playing time in their first season with the squad to make up for the loss.
Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Katie Jones (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made immediate impacts as freshmen a year ago while Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) and Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean View) did the same as sophomore transfers.
McDaniel will also rely on Stephanie Hammond (Parkton, Md./Hereford) to anchor a relatively inexperienced backline in front of junior goalkeeper Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake), who finished 2009 with a .652 save percentage and 2.24 goals-against average.
