Experience will lead solid defense
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Not unlike the offense, the 2010 McDaniel defense returns the majority of its starting lineup from a year ago.
The 116th edition will have two key cogs to replace – all-conference performers linebacker Mike Weick and defensive back Travis Wenrich. However, that doesn't mean the Green Terror will be without experience in all areas of the defense.
Senior Aaron Slaughter (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) returns to his strong safety position after missing all of 2009 with injury and will be the one second-year defensive coordinator Mike Dailey count on to run his defense. Chris Kolb (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key) returns to his cornerback position to join Slaughter in the secondary. A variety of individuals will compete for the other two vacancies, including the void left by Wenrich on the other corner.
Weick may have centered the linebacking corps but he was flanked all year by Paul Smith (Woodlawn, Md./Western Tech) and Tommy Prazenica (Frederick, Md./Frederick). Both Smith and Prazenica are expected to return to their positions and sophomore Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]) is the leading candidate to take over the duties in the middle.
Seniors Mike Ford (Drexel Hill, Pa./Haverford Twp.) and Sam Cox (Towson, Md./Towson) will once again anchor the defensive line. Both had breakout years in the first year of Dailey's scheme, combining for 16.5 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss. Bill Gerdes (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) rounds out the returners, playing in the hybrid position mostly in 2009.
