Hayward goes 3-for-3

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Catholic jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings en route to a 14-7 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Thursday.

Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) led the Green Terror (6-8) with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate, adding a walk and two runs scored. Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) added three hits and an RBI.

Nick Clary led the Cardinals (10-9) with three hits and five RBIs, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning that pushed the lead back out to six after McDaniel had closed to within three in the bottom of the seventh.

Brett Padula led off the game with a single up the middle before a Wyatt Schmidt double down the line put runners at second and third.

Paul Burmester struck out but a passed ball allowed him to reach and score Padula for a 1-0 lead.

After a Marc Hanna double plated Schmidt, the Green Terror recorded a force out at the plate.

A bunt single with runners at the corners scored Hanna before a mental miscue loaded the bases with one out.

A two-out hit batter pushed the lead to 4-0.

A John Palladino triple to the gap keyed a three-run second that stretched the lead to 7-0 after an inning and a half.

Joe Fiore (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the third before Hayward poked a single through the left side.

A Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) walk loaded the bases for Drew Phillips (Sherwood, Md./St. Michael's), who knocked a double down the line to cut the deficit to 7-2.

A Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) flare single to right scored Sivo before a Valori single through the left side scored Phillips to make it a 7-4 game.

Back-to-back doubles from Burmester and Hanna pushed the lead to 8-4 in the top of the fourth before the Green Terror took advantage of a one-out error in the bottom of the frame.

Fiore reached second on the bad throw before Hayward singled to put runners at the corners. Sivo drove in Fiore to make it an 8-5 game.

A Mike McFarland double a, Dan Hinchcliff single and Padula sacrifice fly pushed the lead back to four in the fifth.

A walk to Palladino, fielding error, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly made it a 10-4 game in the top of the sixth.

Hayward led off the sixth with an infield single before scoring on a Windisch two-out double.

Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) led off the seventh with a double before moving to third on a Fiore infield hit.

With Fiore caught in a rundown, Betts was able to score from third to make it a 10-7 game.

A walk to Hannah and Palladeno single preceeded a Clary three-run home run to left field that broke the game back open.

A two-error play in the ninth led to an unearned run, setting the final margin.

Windisch and Betts each had two hits. Phillips and Windisch had two RBIs each.

The Green Terror opens the Centennial Conference schedule with a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The first game of the twinbill starts at 12:30 p.m.
