LANCASTER, Pa. – McDaniel got complete-game efforts from both of its starting pitchers to key a doubleheader sweep of Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) twirled a three-hit, seven-strikeout game one and the Green Terror (22-10, 9-7 CC) plated three runs in the top of the ninth for the win. Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) fanned nine, scattering seven hits, to key a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
Chiorello led the offense with three hits. With the sweep and an Ursinus 8-2 game-two victory over Gettysburg, McDaniel will qualify for the CC tournament for the first time since 2003 with a sweep of the Bears on Sunday.
Will Theriault led the Diplomats (16-23, 5-13 CC) with three hits in the nightcap.
After Chiorello and Matt Valente combined to allow seven hits and 11 baserunners through the first eight innings of game one, Mike Freeman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) drew a walk to lead off the ninth.
Chiorello was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Franklin & Marshall elected to intentionally walk Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) to set up the double play.
Dan French (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) laced a double down the left-field line to score Freeman and Chiorello. Longo was thrown out at third before an error allowed Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) to reach, scoring French in the process for the 3-0 lead.
Chiorello retired the side in order for his sixth win of the season in the bottom of the inning.
In game two, the Green Terror jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first innings on a Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) double, error and two-out Chiorello double.
The Diplomats responded in the bottom of the second when Josh Mendelson was hit by a pitch with one out. An Aaron Gillette single and J.T. Triantos walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch on a two-out strikeout allowed Mendelson to score and tie the game.
Jackow singled to lead off the fifth before moving to second on a Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) sacrifice and to third on a groundout. A two-out error allowed Jackow to score for a 2-1 advantage.
In the seventh, Jackow walked before McDaniel played small ball to nab two more runs.
An error put Jackow at third and Hayward at second before consecutive sacrifice flies from Christopher and Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) stretched the lead to 4-1.
Hayward led off the ninth with a double before a Christopher single and error pushed the lead to 5-1 with a runner at second and no outs.
A Najera single put runners at the corners before three wild pitches set the final margin.
Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) had two hits in game one while Christopher, Najera, Chiorello, Longo and French all had two hits in the nightcap.
Game one of Sunday's home doubleheader starts at 12:30 p.m.
