Betts, Najera notch three hits
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to break a 5-all deadlock and then stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame to defeat McDaniel 7-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday.
Pat Cody rapped out three hits to lead the Bullets (18-10, 7-6 CC), who recorded 14 hits on the day but also left 15 runners on base.
Tied at 5-all, Patrick O'Grady led off the top of the ninth inning with a single back up the middle.
Cam McDonald laid down the sacrifice bunt but a misplay allowed him to reach, putting runners at first and second before Alex Freeman successfully executed a sacrifice of his own.
After a pitching change, a wild pitch scored O'Grady and Zach Parsons drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at the corners.
Cory Karajozi rolled a ball to the third baseman and beat out the relay throw to score MacDonald for a 7-5 lead.
Pinch-hitter Daniel Segel (Newton, Mass./Beaver Country Day) was hit by the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the inning before Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) laid a bunt down the third-base line and beat it out to put runners at first and second.
John Donovan got a sinking fly ball to right field that was caught, not allowing the runner to score from third, and a high popup to shortstop for his second win of the season.
Cody and Nate Simon led off the visitor fourth with back-to-back singles before O'Grady was hit by a one-out pitch to load the bases. An error through the wickets allowed Cody and Simon to score for a 2-0 lead.
Najera led off the fifth inning with a double to the wall in left before Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) drew a walk.
A Joe Fiore (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) sacrifice moved both runners up for Jackow, who doubled in Najera. A Christopher sacrifice fly scored Longo to tie the game.
Consecutive singles from Clint O'Brien and O'Grady opened the sixth inning before a muffed throw on a sacrifice attempt and second error on a Freeman hit up the middle put Gettysburg back in front by two.
A Parsons single, sacrifice and two-out single from Cody stretched the lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth.
Hayward drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning before Ricky LaSota (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) reached on an error. A two-out double down the left-field line scored both runners before taking third on a Najera single and scoring on a Longo sacrifice fly.
Jackow finished with two hits for McDaniel.
The Green Terror concludes the home-and-home series at Gettysburg on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
