One-hit wonder

Karis pitches Gettysburg to 9-0 win over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – One day after Ryan Taylor's 11-strikeout performance, Gettysburg's Matt Karis fanned 12 McDaniel batters and threw a one-hitter to propel his team to a 9-0 Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory on Friday.

Patrick Christopher (Union Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) had the lone hit for the Green Terror (11-17, 4-12 CC), who had just three baserunners in the game.

Pat Cody led the offense for the Bullets (11-20, 5-11 CC) with a 3-for-5 showing.

After Karis surrendered a leadoff walk to Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and a Christopher ground-rule double down the third-base line, he settled in like the steady rain on Preston Field, striking out the next three hitters and retiring 27 of the final 28 McDaniel batters to come to the plate.

With just three Gettysburg singles through the first three innings, it seemed a pitchers' duel was in the chilly, breezy air but Karis helped his own cause, leading off the visitor fourth with a single to shallow right-center.

Karis' single came one batter after his center fielder Patrick O'Grady made a diving catch into the gap – the first of no fewer than four spectacular defensive plays behind the senior righty – to rob Christopher of his second hit in two at bats.

Cody followed with a tailing double inside the right-field line to put runners at second and third for Clint O'Brien, who lofted a ball to right field for a sacrifice fly and 1-0 lead.

Tommy LeNoir's RBI groundout to the right side scored Cody, who was also able to move to third on O'Brien's fly ball.

Karis reached on an error to lead off the sixth before Cody and O'Brien put together back-to-back singles to load the bases.

NeNoir dropped a single into center that scored Karis and Cody. A second error in the inning allowed the ball to go out of play, giving O'Brien home for a 5-0 lead.

A Cam Riera one-out walk and stolen base put runners at second and third for O'Grady, who singled up the middle to score both, pushing the lead to 7-0.

A LeNoir walk and Cam MacDonald double in the eighth put runners at second and third with no outs before Riera single to shallow right to plate both and set the final margin.

Nolan Little (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) was hit by an 0-1 pitch with two outs in the fifth to account for the only other Green Terror baserunner on the day.

McDaniel returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
