WESTMINSTER, Md. – There are three critical components to any baseball team – hitting, pitching and defense. Most baseball coaches will say that if his team can excel in no fewer than two of those areas, it will be a successful season.
When McDaniel finally takes to the field for its opener, it will be the first time the Green Terror has set foot on a baseball field this spring. However, head coach Dave Seibert is optimistic that his team is much improved at every position and he is hopeful that can translate into a postseason berth.
Of its top four hitters a year ago, McDaniel lost only Russell Coover but does return Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) to anchor the defense in centerfield. Kline hit a team-best .405 from the leadoff spot, starting all 28 games.
Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) will flank Kline to the right after hitting .314 as a freshman.
Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) will once again reprise his role as the starting third baseman. A three-year starter, Pace hit .333 last year and is a .320 career hitter, needing 22 knocks to reach 100 hits for his career.
Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) immediate took hold of the No. 1 spot on the staff as a rookie and enters his sophomore campaign with the moniker of ace. Jones went 3-2 in nine appearances, making six starts with three complete games. In 42 2/3 innings, he had a 2.74 ERA with 36 strikeouts.
Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) looks to bounce back to his freshman form after a 3-6 sophomore season in which he had a 5.55 ERA and 27 strikeouts.
Mike Freeman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) will once again give the Green Terror a southpaw in the rotation after recording 17 strikeouts last season.
