Gettysburg pounces early in win
First three Bullet batters reach in 8-1 win over McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ryan Taylor scattered eight hits and fanned seven McDaniel batters in a complete-game effort, keying Gettysburg's 8-1 Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Mike Backus led the offense for the Bullets (12-15, 4-9 CC), rapping out three hits that included the third of three straight hard-hit singles to lead off the game.
Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) went 2-for-3 for the Green Terror (7-14, 3-10 CC) while Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) added a 2-for-4 showing.
Kevin Langhauser poked a single through the left side to lead off the game before Cam Riera and Backus both drove balls into center field to load the bases.
After a strikeout, Matt Karis drove in Langhauser with a sacrifice fly and Chris Simard singled home Riera for a 2-0 lead.
Simard got caught in a rundown, allowing Backus to score from third for a three-run first inning.
Craig Barrows led off the second with a double before scoring on a Langhauser sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 4-0.
An error and a Barrows single in front of a two-out Langhauser three-run home run stretched the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth.
After loading the bases in the visitors fifth, McDaniel got a ground ball for a double play to get out of further damage before Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) roped a one-out double into the left-field corner in the bottom of the frame. He scored on a Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) RBI groundout after moving to third on a wild pitch.
A hit batter and second Green Terror error coupled with a Backus RBI double set the final margin in the top of the sixth.
McDaniel concludes the home-and-home series at Gettysburg on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
