Frequently Asked Questions – Merritt Fitness Center
Who can use the fitness center?
Current students, faculty, staff, immediate family
members of faculty/staff, and their guests may use the fitness
center. I.D. card is required to enter the facility.
Guests must obtain a guest pass from the fitness desk
attendant. Everyone must sign in at the attendant desk and
present their McDaniel College I.D.
Where is the Fitness Center?
The facility is located at the Gill Center.
If I need assistance, have questions or concerns who can
help me?
The fitness desk attendant can assist you or you may
contact the Fitness Director, Scott Singleton, 410-857-2432, ssingleton@mcdaniel.edu,
Athletics Dept. Room 109 at the Gill Center.
Are there rules and user guidelines for the fitness
center?
Yes, everyone is expected to comply with posted rules and
standard gym etiquette.
Is there a risk of injury?
Yes, the use of exercise equipment and participation in
fitness activities could increase the risk of injury or even
death. You agree that your use of the Fitness Center is at
your own risk and you assume full responsibility and all risks
arising from your use of the Fitness Center.
Can I safely begin exercising or should I check with my
doctor first?
If you have physical or medical conditions, impairment,
disease, illness or any other reason why you should not engage in
physical activity even if you wanted to then you should consult a
qualified healthcare provider before beginning an exercise
program.
In the event of an emergency what happens?
Call Campus Safety at ext. 2202. Campus Safety can
provide first aid and CPR. If the Fitness Center or Gill
Center becomes unsafe then it may require evacuation of the
facility. Locate the nearest exit and immediately leave the
facility.
What else do I need to know about using the Fitness
Center?
Read all signage posted in the facility. Signage
will provide important information about rules, emergency and
safety notices, danger and warning statements, and other
miscellaneous information.
How do I know the facility and equipment is clean?
Everyone is required to wipe and clean equipment after
use and to return equipment back to its appropriate place.
Weight plates, bars and dumbbells must be re-racked. The
Fitness Center staff will also complete a daily list of cleaning
tasks to help maintain the cleanliness of the facility.
How should I dress for the fitness center?
Appropriate attire is required. Loose and
comfortable athletic clothing and supportive athletic shoes is
suggested. Shirts must be worn at all times. Sandals
and flip flops are not allowed.
Is there television or music at the fitness center?
Televisions are located in close proximity to the
cardiovascular equipment on the second level. Only personal
music devices may be brought into the fitness center.
Is there a place to store my things during my
workout?
Yes, lockers are available just outside the free weight
room and on the second level. Locks may be used but must be
removed after each use.
Fitness Center Rules:
- Everyone is required to sign-in at the attendant desk and provide McDaniel College ID

Proper gym attire and footwear is required. No flip flops or sandals.

Only personal music devices may be used in the fitness center.

Always put equipment back when you are done.

Always use sanitizer wipes to clean pads and equipment immediately after you are done.

Enter and exit the fitness center through the main entry only.

Please be considerate and respectful of others.
